Kim Burton

Kim Burton
Director of the Education Abroad Program

Kim grew up in the San Fernando Valley and moved to San Diego to work at the Programs Abroad Office. She received her MS in Higher Education from Indiana University, Bloomington, which she calls, “The best college town ever!” Kim studied abroad for a year at the University of Madrid in Spain, but her favorite city in the world is Salzburg, Austria because it’s like a fairy tale and is home of The Sound of Music. If she could live anywhere in the world it would be any large city in a Spanish-speaking country where she could use her language skills and experience the culture at every turn. Kim advises students interested in France, as well as those interested in Opportunities Abroad Programs in Eastern Europe. She encourages students to go abroad more than once. “Try different experiences,” she says. “Study the first time, then go somewhere else to work or volunteer.  Do these things while you're young, before you settle into a career.”

Danelle's background is in counseling in higher education, and she holds a Master of Science Degree in Counseling from California State University, Northridge. Danelle studied abroad in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and Barcelona, Spain. Her favorite cities include: Kyoto, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Sydney, and of course, Barcelona.

Maribeth Erlich

Maribeth Erlich
Programs Abroad Advisor

Tapas, flamenco, and Spanish wine are not the only passions in this Wisconsin native’s life. After studying abroad in Seville, Spain and working in Ensenada, Mexico, Maribeth knew that international education was the career path for her and earned her MSE in International and Comparative Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. In her spare time, Maribeth loves to ride her horse. If her life were a book, it would be titled A Survival Guide: One Woman's Advice for Supporting Your Horse Habit on a Small Budget. Her favorite cities are Seville, Spain and Edinburgh, Scotland.  She advises students going on programs to Hungary, Russia, and the UK through EAP and Spain through OAP.  Maribeth’s favorite part about working at PAO is talking to study abroad returnees and hearing about how she played a role in changing their lives. “It makes all the paperwork worth it,” she says.

Jim Galvin

Jim Galvin
Director of the Opportunities Abroad Program
Director of Faculty-Led Programs

Jim grew up in the Midwest and attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned his M.A. in U.S. Diplomatic History. He did a short-term study abroad program in Spain and has traveled in Latin America and Europe, though he plans to continue traveling until he has visited every continent. Jim advises students interested in the Opportunities Abroad Program (which includes study, work, intern, and volunteer opportunities), as well as Global Seminars. He would really like to return to Ireland to get back in touch with his ancestors’ culture. His experiences abroad have helped to shape his personal interests and career. Jim recommends that students go abroad with an open mind. Learn about other cultures and gain new perspectives on your interests, career, and country.

Kathleen McLaren-Hawking

Kathleen McLaren-Hawking
Programs Abroad Advisor

Kathleen is as well-traveled as they come. After growing up in Alexandria, Virginia, she worked abroad in Scotland for six months, interned with Lancaster University in the UK, and worked as a staff member on Semester at Sea. Recently, she volunteered abroad with Alternative Breaks in Peru. She earned her M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Ohio State University. Kathleen advises students interested in going to Barbados, Canada, Africa and Semester at Sea as well as students going to Western Europe on OAP. Her favorite city is Ceský Krumlov in the Czech Republic, and if she could live anywhere in the world it would be the Caribbean. Her favorite thing to do in her spare time is spend time with her daughter, Lily. Her favorite thing about working at PAO is supervising the student workers. Kathleen believes that life would be better if everyone would sing what they had to say – just like High School Musical!

Kelly O'Sullivan

Kelly O'Sullivan
Director of Academic Integration and Outreach

An alumna of UC San Diego, Kelly traveled to Europe with only her backpack after her freshman year in hopes of finding a job and improving her French. That year proved to be influential as she still keeps in touch with the friends she made overseas. Upon her return, she obtained her Masters in Educational Leadership at SDSU. Kelly has two major passions in life: her six-year-old daughter, Saoirse, and swimming. She swims with the Masters program at UC San Diego and participates in many open water races in the ocean during the summer. Her love of the sea parallels her love of Vietnamese food, and she hopes to one day travel to Vietnam and learn not only about the culture and history, but also try a San Diego favorite, pho, in its natural habitat.

Tonia Pizer

Tonia Pizer
Global Seminars Coordinator

Tonia began her international experience early by living in England for a year when she was five. She also attended a Dutch middle school as a teenager. In high school her passion was France, where she completed AP French and lived with two different French families for a month each. Then she decided to try something different by pre-registering for Chinese classes during her freshman year at Oberlin College. Tonia has studied in Taiwan and taught English in China, and is married to a Chinese person with two half-Chinese kids. Originally from North Carolina, she moved to California to earn her master's degree at UC San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. If she were a student now, she would love to go on the Global Seminars Jazz in Paris program because of her love of music. Her advice to students is to not be afraid to try something new. You never know what great opportunities each adventure will open for you.

Rachel Rigoli

Rachel Rigoli
Programs Abroad Advisor

If you have ever thought about worshipping in the Temple of the Monkey God in Nepal, Rachel is the advisor for you! She advises students interested in Central and Southeast Asia, Japan, and the Middle East and OAP programs in Australia and New Zealand. Rachel earned her M.A. in International Development Studies and International Education from George Washington University. Her favorite city is Kathmandu, Nepal, but Rachel has also had experiences abroad working in Australia and Taiwan. She is a alum of EAP Australia, where she spent a year studying at the University of Melbourne. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and dog. She encourages all students to take advantage of the opportunity of study abroad because, as she says, “This is your chance!”

Eric Tarbell

Eric Tarbell
Programs Abroad Advisor

Beginning his international experience while still in high school, Eric spent the summer in Sevilla, Spain playing water polo and living with a host family, which was set up through his former coach. It was the start to a beautiful love affair with the travel bug (and also paella). It can be safe to say that this informal study abroad opportunity shaped Eric’s life as he spent a college semester in Santiago, Chile studying at the Universidad Católica de Chile, which in turn inspired his trips to over 40 different countries including Brazil, Thailand, Cambodia, and China. After earning his Bachelor’s in International Relations from Stanford, Eric worked for 4 years as a Study Abroad Advisor at University of the Pacific before pursuing his Master’s Degree here at UCSD’s very own IRPS. Not only has Eric trekked in Nepal, but he also attended a wedding in India, and as far as the world cup is concerned, he is a Brazil fan, although Argentina’s Messi is his favorite player. If he could give a piece of advice to students, it would be to go for a year because it really makes a difference with language skills and to quote UCSD’s favorite author, “if you never did, you should. These things are fun and fun is good”- Dr. Seuss.

Christine Trinidad

Christine Trinidad
Programs Abroad Advisor

If Christine’s life were a movie, it would be titled Been There, Done That. It is clear that this L.A. native dreams to live everywhere at least once. Her favorite city in the world is Rio de Janeiro, but if she could attend an EAP program now, it would be in Sweden or Turkey, where she could indulge in her love of photography.  Besides her incredible travel ambition, Christine studied abroad in London and advises students going on the EAP UK Summer program.  Christine graduated with her BA from UC San Diego and is currently earning her Masters in Education at SDSU. She considers going abroad the best choice she ever made in college – it opened her mind to the endless possibilities available in the world. “DO IT!” she says. “Because if you don’t, it’s a love that you will never understand.”
