Overview of Volunteer Work Abroad
Volunteering abroad is one of the best ways to get international experience. It is flexible and can last anywhere from one or two weeks to several years. You can volunteer abroad during summer, winter or spring breaks, for a quarter, year or even anytime after you graduate.

Consider the following to determine if volunteering abroad is right for you:
- Unpaid
- May or may not be related to your academic interests
- Generally does not require specific skills or previous experience
- Typically grassroots and project based
Types of Volunteer Abroad Opportunities
Short Term
- Volunteer Programs
- Program sponsors often charge a fee for participation.
- Room & board may or may not be included.
- Work Camps
- Typically 2 - 4 weeks in the summer, usually in Europe
- Room and board usually provided.
Long Term
- US Government: Peace Corps (fully-funded, degree required)
- Non-Governmental Organizations
- May require skilled professionals
- May or may not have a religious affiliation
